During a time of great spiritual darkness due to wanton violence over religious ideals, Teressa of Avila did not succumb to the fear of death but instead called men and women to a life of peace and prayer. In the 1500’s, the Spanish Empire was becoming the richest nation in Europe. Sending ships of conquerors to the Americas, the Spanish found gold and silver in abundance as well as slaves. The violence these Conquistadors did to the inhabitants of the new world is unimaginable. But, at the same time, with the same veracity and unhindered bloodshed, the nations of Europe were at war with one another over protestant and catholic views of faith and governance. Nation fought nation for dominance and determination in being either a Catholic or Protestant kingdom. In the midst of such a tumultuous time, Teressa called her fellow Christians to a life of spiritual renewal, seeking to be transformed each day into the likeness of Christ.

Here is an excerpt from her piece, “Prayer, as Faith and Fervor for God Alone.” In this, you can see Teressa’s devotion to the one true King as she beckons others to follow her in complete surrender and allegiance to this King in the midst of such dark times.

It is quite clear that when a master teaches anything, he developed a love for his pupils so that what he teaches will inspire and delight the pupil. It is helpful also to pay attention to what is being taught. Our Heavenly Father acts toward us in a similar way.

Take notice, then, of the fears that men may represent to you, or of the dangers they put before you. Consider that these are not times when we should believe everybody, but only those who you see are walking conformable with the life of Christ.

Mental and vocal prayer belong together. If some tell you that you can recite the Lord’s Prayer and yet still think of the world, here I am sadly silent. For if you would conduct yourself before so great a Lord, it is proper to realize Whom you are addressing- if you would pay Him proper respect. For how can you address a king, and call him “your majesty,” or know the etiquette when addressing a noble, unless you are acquainted with his rank and dignity.

What, then, is this? O my Sovereign! How can it be tolerated? For you are my God, the Eternal King, Whose Kingdom is not a borrowed one! So I must meditate about the greatness of God, even as I pray silently to Him.

This week, Wendell Berry, an influential writer and personal favorite of mine, went to be with the Lord. I was introduced to Wendell Berry’s work by my seminary professor of pastoral ministry during an extremely formative time in my life. My professor showed that the long, slow growth of creating healthy agrarian terrain, a favorite topic for Berry, ran parallel to the commitment necessary for spiritual growth and pastoral care.

I will forever be indebted to Berry’s wisdom and christian conviction. He taught a very unpopular ideal: to be people that work for the healing of the world, we must live fully and purposefully within our place. In a time when most people live transient, fast paced lives, constantly looking for the next place to live, to work, to get- he taught, through his writings, that the most influential thing you can do is to find a place- taking in all the pains and problems, joys and beauty of that place and to live fully within it. In this way, we become like the mustard seed that grew roots deep into the soil and become so large that it gave comfort to everything around it.

Here are a few of his words that I hope will encourage you:

For many years, my walks have taken me down an old fencerow in a wooded hollow on what was once my grandfather's farm. A battered galvanized bucket is hanging on a fence post near the head of the hollow, and I never go by it without stopping to look inside. For what is going on in that bucket is the most momentous thing I know, the greatest miracle that I have ever heard of: it is making earth. The old bucket has hung there through many autumns, and the leaves have fallen around it and some have fallen into it. Rain and snow have fallen into it, and the fallen leaves have held the moisture and so have rotted. Nuts have fallen into it, or been carried into it by squirrels; mice and squirrels have eaten the meat of the nuts and left the shells; they and other animals have left their droppings; insects have flown into the bucket and died and decayed; bird have scratched in it and left their droppings or perhaps a feather or two. This slow work of growth and death, gravity and decay, which is the chief work of the world, has by now produced in the bottom of the bucket several inches of black humus. I look into that bucket with fascination because I am a farmer of sorts and an artist of sorts, and I recognize there an artistry and a farming far superior to mine, or to that of any human. I have seen the same process at work on the tops of boulders in a forest, and it has been at work immemorially over most of the land surface of the world. All creatures die into it, and they live by it." (From his essay, What are People For?)

Ask the questions that have no answers.
Invest in the millennium. Plant sequoias.
Say that your main crop is the forest
that you did not plant,
that you will not live to harvest.

We have busy schedules and busier expectations. Nothing seems to be busier than Monday mornings. We have tasks to complete, people to call, breakfast to make, schedules to keep and miles to go before we sleep.

Hard work and long hours seems to be ingrained in the American psyche. When you produce the hours and product, you have the respect of your fellow human. We stay busy perhaps because we are afraid of the alternative: being seen as sluggish, incapable of showing self importance. But such a work ethic creates exhausted people, exhausted work environments, and even exhausted churches.

Take for example the modern approach of American industrial agriculture. Working the land each year, farmers and ranchers have exhausted the nutrients in the soil to a critical breaking point. With a work first, deal with rest later mentality, industrial agriculture has banished any attempt at letting land rest. It is, like a horse chasing the extended carrot, pursuing the future profit by any means necessary. It is no wonder that each year, the land is sprayed copiously by artificial fertilizers, thousands of dollars each time, just for the chance for a farmer to break even at the bank.

However, this narrative of production falls short of the biblical understanding of work. Despite our cultural story, work was a gift by God to humanity. Work was something to be enjoyed as a way of fellowshiping with God through the protection and diligence needed to see a world teaming with life. God himself works and finds joy in his work. But God also placed a limit on his work by creating the Sabbath. Sabbath is God’s levee, blocking the flow of work from inoculating all things. Sabbath and work, in tandem, were made for those made in God’s image.

Wendell Berry, once wrote:

In token of His landlordship, God required a Sabbath for the land, which was to be left fallow every seventh year; and a Sabbath of Sabbaths every fiftieth year, a “year of jubilee,” during which not only would the fields lie fallow, but the land would be returned to its original owners, as if to free it of the taint of trade and the conceit of human ownership. But beyond their agricultural and social intent, these Sabbaths ritualize an observance of the limits of “my power and the might of mine hand”–the limits of human control. Looking at their fallowed fields, the people are to be reminded that the land is there only by gift; it exists in its own right, and does not begin or end with any human purpose.

Knowing that the time for work will be enough, respects the limits that God has placed on our abilities. We will labor and toil, but the product, the time, the energy for this is all the property of God. We plant the seed, we pull the weeds, we water and labor, but we do not make a seed germinate. We do not do plant photosynthesis. Extra labor will not produce a crop. We do what we know to do, with the time we have, and rest knowing that the creation is being brought to life by God. This is the secret of sabbath- to trust in the work of God, not our own work. To be people of sabbath is to let the things uncovered, the work that has not fruited, to be continually left in the charge of the only one that can make it grow.

Perhaps it is time we begin practicing sabbath. Jesus often went off to lonely places to pray and be away from the tumult of the world in order to hear the voice of the Father.

Go into your private room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place - Matthew 6:6

Henri Nouwen once said, “Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life.” Jesus knew that the Father could be heard best when we enter into that secret place, alone. The silence of our ambitions, our doing and going, our responsibilities, our doubts and fears- it is the place where the voice of God can be heard unabated. What God has to say is life giving and will nurture our souls like a good soaking rain after an intensive heat wave. And in these moments of growth and nurture, we have the strength and joy necessary to be recipients of that great deluge- the love of God.

Learn by little the desire for all things
Which perhaps is not desire at all
But undying love which perhaps
Is not love at all but gratitude
For the being of all things which
Perhaps is not gratitude at all
But the maker’s joy in what is made,
The joy in which we come to rest.

C.S. Lewis was and is one of the most influential Christian writers and thinkers in the last 100 years. He is known for his fictional series (The Chronicles of Narnia), his radio lectures that were turned into a book (Mere Christianity), and many others.

Today, I would like to share a passage from his work, The Weight of Glory. This a short piece that speaks of the future glorification or damnation of individuals at the end times. The crux of this piece is that as Christians, we are called to love our brothers and sisters as well as the lost world around us. In this way, we show our love for God.

It may be possible for each to think too much of his own potential glory hereafter; it is hardly possible for him to think too often or too deeply about that of his neighbor. The load, or weight, or burden of my neighbour’s glory should be laid on my back, a load so heavy that only humility can carry it, and the backs of the proud will be broken. It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible “gods “and “goddesses,” to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you say it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. it is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations- these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit- immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, form the outset, taken each other seriously- no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be a real and costly love with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner- no mere tolerance, or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your sense. If he is your christian neighbor, he is holy in almost the same way, for in him also Christ vere latitat- the glorifier and the glorified, Glory Himself, is truly hidden.

There is a Peanuts comic that has Lucy and Linus staring out a window, looking at a torrential downpour. Lucy, with much anxiety, confesses that she fears that it will never stop raining- perhaps it will flood the whole world. Linus reassures her that such a thing could never happen. He explains that in Genesis God proclaimed that he would never flood the earth again and that he put the rainbow in the sky as a sign for reassurance. Lucy then, happily satiated from these fears, proclaims that Linus’ words have put her mind at ease. Linus responds, “Sound Theology has a way of doing that.” Indeed, sound theology does. It listens to the instruction of Holy Spirit and seeks to faithfully live that out for the edification of the believer, the church, and the world

So what really is the point of theology anyways? I know that in many circles the word “theology” has a bad reputation. It is often viewed as a way to dissect and perhaps even analyze to death one’s faith. So to begin, we must first define what theology is not– it is not a replacement or an alternative to a personal relationship with Jesus. It is not the foundation of the faith that we have. The faith is founded and rooted in the person Jesus Christ. Jesus is the author and perfector of our faith. Theology is simply trying to make sense of this faith as it is lived out, thought over, and articulated by the faithful. Anselm, the early bishop of Canterbury, once described theology as “faith seeking understanding.” I find this definition to be very helpful. I believe that all good theology, in its diverse traditions and denominations, is best lived out when it seeks to be this– a faith in Jesus seeking to be lived out and understood in our world. It always, and must, start from faith.

We see the disciples do this precise thing after hearing and responding to the call of Jesus. These people were called and made a decision to follow Jesus. However they often got stumped concerning certain teachings of Jesus. Their actions show us that they sought to understand this calling that they had received. They approached Jesus out of these quandaries and asked him to explain what he meant concerning many parables as well as some of Jesus’ actions (see Matt 13:10; Luke 11:1-11, John 13:6). When wondering how to pray, they came to Jesus and asked him to teach them. When unsure about parables, they asked him to explain them. When unsure as to why he predicts the collapse of the Jerusalem, they ask for clarity. In these instances we see that integral to being a disciple means being a learner- being curious, inquisitive– it is a faith seeking to understand. Theology then is the servant of faith and not vice versa.

Theology then, in its purest form is an attempt to connect faith in Jesus to faithful living. The living out the faith interpreted through scripture, through the speaking of the Holy Spirit as lived within a community of fellow believers, then is nothing short of discipleship. To be a person seeking to be a disciple of Jesus, we are then beckoned to be theologians. Therefore the congruency or overlap of discipleship and theology cannot be overstated. To do one without the other is either futile or impossible.

In response to faith, we come to believe in Jesus and live out the life that he has for us. The task of the Christian then is to be a disciple- one that approaches Jesus in prayer asking him to teach us. The Holy Spirit then speaks to us, through the word of the Bible. However, scripture must be read and interpreted in a community of believers. Theology and discipleship therefore holds Church community as a prerequisite. Christian communal living is the place in which theology and discipleship are able to be taught, lived out, corrected, and articulated.

Each redeemed person within the church then is a living and breathing theologian. We are people of faith, coming to God asking him to teach us. We are people of faith seeking understanding. And as his Spirit speaks to us individually and communally, we are brought deeper and deeper into his presence. A presence that is Holy and pure. A presence that teaches us more and more how to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind… and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

I pray that we may be such a community of faith that vigorously seeks understanding.

I am an amateur naturalist. In Texas, through my many nature adventures, I learned the names and caricatures of the native bugs, reptiles (yes, even snakes), mammals, flowers, trees, shrubs, and cacti. As a young man, I picked and pressed flowers and collected leaves for field notebooks and composed countless sketches and paintings of animals. Why? The joy, peace, and beauty of nature was like a poem that slowly and quietly unlocked a part of my soul that I didn’t even realize was closed.

Jesus picks up on this attunement to nature that seems to pervade culture and class. He seems to say, ‘do you notice how sparrows are so abundant and prolific. They seem to be of little value in our world. They are even captured and sold for next to nothing, exploited and used for mere pennies. But God cares for them deeply. When one of them comes to the end of their life, hidden under the briars and brambles, taking its last breath, our Father is there with it, present and compassionate. If this is how compassionate and present he is with sparrows, just think how compassionate and present he is in our lives- we are made in his image; we are worth more than many sparrows.’

Life is precious- no matter the size or monetary value we put on it. Because its worth is not given by human scales, but by the love of our Father who declares all of his creation: “very good” - and who declares all of humanity to be made in his image.

Therefore, do not fear. You, yes you there- you are worth more than many sparrows. And if God is attuned to the living and dying of the smallest of birds- attending each of their funerals, just think of how much he loves you.

Psalm 19
1 The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

² Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.

whose voice is not heard.

and their words to the end of the world.

Romans 1:20-23
²⁰ For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. ²¹ For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. ²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools, ²³ and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

The Psalmist begins with the declaration that the heavens, declares the glory of God. God is seen through the beauty, vastness, and diversity of the heavens - the sky, clouds, sun, moon, planets, solar systems, galaxies, black holes, the expansion of space itself. Here on our beautiful island we see first hand how God reveals his creativity and character through his created order- from the snow capped peaks to the intricacies of moss growth.

Many theologians through the years have called this type of revelation, General Revelation. This is the revelation that points to divinity, and in this way it awakens the divine image within us. With constant exposure, it causes the divine image latent within each of us to yearn for the divine.

Paul points out that with only general revelation, humans tend to worship created things rather than the God of all the universe. With the divine image within each of us, we have a longing for a relationship with God, but without the specific revelation, humanity worships other created things or even things that we have created. We do this, because there is this innate desire to worship and give praise. We were made for communion with the Divine. As Augustine said in his Confessions, “You have created us for yourself. Our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you, Oh God.”

Therefore, as the Psalmist and Paul in Romans point out, there is a need for a specific revelation, i.e. the revelation of who God is. The Psalmist points to the law, the Torah, to be the defining mandate. Here we see God’s character and judicial order revealed. Jesus later said, he came to fulfill the law, meaning that the full revelation and mandates of God are seen and learned through him.

The specific revelation of God is Jesus Christ. He is the exact representation of God (Hebrews 1:3)- the same image as God (Philippians 2:6). We see and experience Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit as it speaks to us through scripture. Scripture tells us that if we want to see God, how God rules, how God treats his enemies, how God seeks and saves the lost, how God shows compassion and endurance in commitment, we look at Jesus.

We cannot live the type of life God has in store for his people if we do the Christian life in isolation. Christianity was never meant to be a personal, sequestered belief lived merely in the private confined parameters of personal life. Stanley Hauerwas jokingly personifies this type of theology by saying, “Jesus is Lord and Savior, but that is just my personal opinion.” If Jesus is Lord, he is not just my Lord, but Lord of all creation- the heavens, the earth, and all that is in them. This means that all things under heaven and earth fall under his authority, including (and perhaps most importantly) the communal life of the church. The church, as it interprets scripture in community and seeks to live out this Word in community, together shares the image of Jesus. We need each other in order to share the full image of Christ, the specific revelation of God, to the world. When we read scripture or seek to live out the christian life in isolation, we read with our own set of spectacles, our lens of understanding the world. We interpret and live out the word through our lens of culture, education, experiences, etc. This, when done without the body of believers, (at best) gives only a sliver of the vastness and wholeness of Christ. At worst, it creates a false identity of God that is formed in our own likeness (since we become the only one that listens and defines the will of God). Isolation of faith (without a community of believers) often creates a false deity that resembles the individual, i.e. the deity loves and hates the same things that the individual loves or hates.

Therefore, we need each other to share our own spectacles (experiences, culture, etc.) so that together we may grow and build each other up in love, as each part does its work (Ephesians 4:16)- to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:12-13). A community of faith is not optional; it is essential. We need each other.
