God and His Covenantal Faithfulness
Genesis 15
In Genesis 15, God seals the deal with Abram by cutting a covenant. In ancient times, to make a covenant, the two parties making the deal were to split animals in two (I know, sounds barbaric) and then walk together in between the two halves of the animals. The significance in this was in saying that if any of the two parties were to break their oath in fulfilling their part of the deal, then they were to end up just as these animals: split in two and laid in the wilderness as carrion.
Interestingly, in Genesis 15, God puts Abram into a deep sleep, rendering him incapable of walking in between the two parts. Instead, God alone walks the path between the severed animals. He alone makes himself accountable to the fulfillment of the covenant.
What does this mean? It means that God knew that Abram and his descendants were unable to fulfill their part of the deal. God knew this and yet entered into a covenant anyway. God is the sole person making the deal revealing that the whole weight of responsibility– the fulfillment of the covenant and the blessings of the covenant– relied simply on God’s faithfulness. Not on humanity’s faithfulness.
What does this mean for us, today? We can rest assured that God will continue that great work that he has begun in the world and in our lives and will bring it to completion. He has pledged it. We simply must have faith that he is the faithful one.
