I Want to see Miracles
1Kings 17:24
In 1Kings 17, we hear of a great famine and drought in the land of Judah. Elijah, the prophet of YHWH, speaking out against the idolatry of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, commands that no moisture would be found in the land due to their breaking of the covenant. Elijah then goes into hiding to avoid being caught and killed. He wanders through the desert to a place shown to him by God. Here, he is fed by ravens and gets his water from a flowing brook. After a while, the brook dries up causing him to leave that place and find provisions elsewhere. He ends up leaving the country and goes to live among the gentiles. Here he finds a starving woman with a young son. He stays with them while their food reserves are miraculously replenished to their full capacity each day. Suddenly tragedy strikes. The young boy becomes ill and dies. Grief stricken, Elijah takes the young boy and pleads with God for the son’s life. The Lord hears him and raises the boy from the dead. The woman overcome with joy exclaims, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.”
The entire life of Elijah is littered with miracles. We hear of his devotion through obedience and see that it is coupled with the miraculous works of God. Those around him saw it; those around him were blessed through his obedience.
The questions I come away with from reading these verses are:
How does my life show a complete obedience to God in the face of powers that wish to keep me from living out this calling faithfully?
How does my obedience bless others around me?
How can my obedience to God show the miraculous works of God to those around me?
What are some hard/radical things that God is calling for me to do– things that I may fear doing?
Whatever your answers to these questions may be, I pray that your life and mine may be a testament to the goodness of a loving God that desires to heal a broken world. May our lives be the miracle that others need to see so that they may place faith in Jesus Christ.
