Last Sunday we looked at the story of Joseph as he forgives his brothers. One point I wanted to highlight was the reason Genesis gives for this turn of events. Joseph learned through time and experience what it meant to be engulfed in the story of God’s love and provision. He learned through difficult times that God loved him and was with him through every event. With this deep assurance in the love and provision of God, he was able to see his brothers through the lens of God’s love. He did not excuse or belittle their evil actions. Instead he forgave because he learned that God forgives and loves the world. The narrative of Genesis tells us this deep truth through story. The story of Genesis does not show restoration and forgiveness as a pragmatic several step program or a logical sequence of events. But forgiveness comes as people begin to see themselves being caught up into the story of God. In this way, we see that forgiveness is more organic than systematic- more of a journey than an event. Forgiveness is an attribute, a disposition that comes out of a walk with God.
