Who is the Greatest
Luke 9:46-48
“But an argument arose among them concerning who was the greatest among them. But Jesus knowing the argument of their hearts, took and placed a child by him. And he said to them, If anyone should receive this child in my name, they will receive me. And if anyone receives me, they receive the one who sent me. For the least one among you is the greatest.”
The desire to be seen and heard is perhaps universal. Our media blasts the importance of the loudest, wildest words and lives of the most vocal. We have social media that frames our importance in how many likes or shares we have on posts. The message is clear: make yourself important. Puff yourself up, so that you will be perceived as great and influential.
But Jesus will have none of this. He takes the most mistreated and unseen group in society: children. He places a child among them and says, ‘look, if you want to be great, take care of people like this kid: snot nosed, unable to tie their shoes, unable to work and contribute to society, unable to write a book (let alone a few sentences) without grammatical errors. They can’t vote; they can’t drive themselves to school. They can’t make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They can’t control their emotions; they can barely keep their room clean (if even that).
They ask for help. They give hugs. They aren’t afraid to tell you 20 times each day that they love you.
Leadership, greatness, and influence in the Kingdom of Heaven doesn’t look like riches, power, or commanding voices… It looks like service- service to people that need love, compassion, healthy relationships, patience, patience, and even more patience.
Do we want to be great? Then we must look like servants to the most needy people in the world. This won’t win us awards, acknowledgements, big buildings, big crowds, wide swaths of influence and power. But it will be faithful to Jesus, the true King of all the earth, the one who came to serve (not to be served) and who gave his life as a ransom for many.
